Recycling bikes to make furniture

I’m a big fan of products that are made to be recycled or retooled. Our society judges success by how much we consume, and while I love to see a reverse of the trend, the more we reuse and recycle in the meantime, the less impact we’ll have on our planet.  That’s why I’m such a fan of programs like the Yellow Bike Project that repair bikes and put them back out into the community. Not only do the bikes help those who can’t afford the high cost of transportation, it saves the bikes from ending up in the land fill.

So in this light, I am pleased to let you know about the company Bike Furniture Design. Designer Andy Gregg has reused parts from old bikes as well as cars and trains to create a whole line of modern furniture. Using rims and tires combined into clever forms, he has created tables, chairs, and even a love seat that would be welcome in any stylish urban setting. In fact, if you have bike parts you no longer need but don’t want taking up space at the dump, you may be able to recycle it into one of Gregg’s pieces. Very cool.

You can see some of these chairs by stopping by Mellow Johnny’s or view the entire line on Bike Furniture Design’s website
